THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY

 

There are no classes scheduled for Chicago Public School students and teachers for the Thanksgiving Holiday.  The break is Thursday, November 27th through Friday, November 28th.

 

Wednesday, November 26th is a full day of attendance for students.  In addition, after school activities will be held for students.  School will resume at its normal time on Monday, December 1, 2008.

 

 

8th Grade Parent Meeting

 

Parents of 8th grade students are encouraged to come out to find out more about 8th grade graduation activities.  Wednesday, December 1, 2008, 8th grade parents are invited to attend an informational meeting regarding 8th grade activities, achievement and fees.  The meeting will take place from 6:00 p.m.- 7:00p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL INFO

 

Parents, the time has begun for 8th grade students to begin applying to high school. Chicago Public Schools require students to complete and submit applications for schools that are outside of the student’s attendance area.  Please be aware, if you live near a selective enrollment high school that your child must qualify, apply and be accepted in order to attend that school. 

Students who are not accepted or do not apply at a high school will be automatically enrolled at their neighborhood school.  The deadline for high school applications is Friday, December 19th. The counselor will not be able to accept applications after this date.

Canter Middle School would like all parents to be aware that there are several days of non-attendance for students during the month of November.  Students will not have any classes on the following days:

REPORT CARD PICK- UP & PARENT RAFFLE

 

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 is Report Card Pick-Up.  Parents may come to meet with teachers between the hours of 12: 00 – 3:00 p.m. and from 3:45 – 6:15 p.m.  Teachers will be on lunch from 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.  Report Cards can be picked in the main office during break time.

 

In efforts to boost Report Card Pick-Up participation an anonymous donor is sponsoring a Raffle.  For every Report Card picked-up parents will receive a raffle ticket and entered into a drawing for a prize of $100.  There are five chances to win!  So come on out and meet your child’s teachers and join in the FUN!

HIGH SCHOOL FAIR

 

In addition, Canter Middle School will be hosting a High School Fair for its 8th grade students and their parents.  High School counselors and booths will be available from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the Multi-purpose room.  Feel free to visit the fair during the break.

 

P.T.O. PARENT DRIVE

The Canter Middle School, Parent Teacher Organization wants and needs you.  During, Report Card Pick-Up, Wednesday, November 12th the P.T.O. will have an information/registration table set-up. Stop by and get involved.  Parents are encouraged to make a $ 5, donation to the P.T.O. and pledge to support Canter students with your time and energy. The class with the most parent donations will win a Pizza Party!

To mark this historic election, Canter students will be participating in a school-wide race and a mock election.  Students are to wear their Canter Middle School gym uniforms.  Students will cast their vote for the candidate of their choice when they cross the finish line. In addition, Canter will be transformed into a mock polling place where students will go through the voting process.

HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS!

Canter will be hosting a Halloween Dance for Canter students “only” on Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.  The cost of the dance is $4.  Tickets will be sold during lunch by Ms. Miazga.  Chaperones are welcomed.

In addition, in efforts to keep students safe, all after school activities will be cancelled for October 31st.  Students are to go home immediately following school.   Students are not permitted to wear costumes to school.

 

CHICAGO CARES

Canter has been awarded a grant by Chicago Cares which will fund beatification and community projects for our school.  Thursday, October 30,2008 the 2ndphase of the Canter beautification project will take place.  Representative of the Canter community will serve as team leaders.

Students will be participating in workshops at Kenwood Academy.  Students are encouraged to be on time to school.  It is important that we all do our part to make October 30th a success!

CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS ANTI-GUN PLEDGE

 

 Thursday, October 24, 2008 the Chicago Police Department will visit our school in efforts to encourage students to, report and refrain from the use of guns.  Students will have the opportunity to hear Mr. Holt, father of Blair Holt speak.  In, addition, students will be asked to sign an ANTI-GUN PLEDGE.  Parents are welcome to attend.

 

THE DRIVE AWARD

 

Ms. Carmen Guy, one of Canter’s very own teachers has been nominated for the Chicago Public Schools, DRIVE Award. The DRIVE Award celebrates the dedication and creativity of teachers.  We are extremely proud of her grateful for helping to make Canter Middle School a better place. Please congratulate her when you see her!

Progress Reports

Friday, October 3, 2008 marks the end of the fifth week of school. All students will receive a progress report, TODAY reflecting their progress over the up until the fifth week of school.   Progress reports must be signed by a parent of guardian and returned to the homeroom teacher.  In addition, parents may request a conference on the progress report.

October 10, 2008 is Chicago Public Schools, College Day!  Canter students are encouraged to show their college pride by wearing a t-shirt, or sweat shirt of their favorite college. 

 

 After School Activities

After School activities will begin the week of October 6, 2008.  Students should have come home with a list of after school activities and a permission slip.  All students must submit a permission slip in order to participate in all after school activities.

GOOD NEWS!!!!! ISAT SCORES IMPROVE!!!

 The Canter Community is extremely proud of the efforts of our students, faculty, staff and parents.  Canter continues to gain momentum on the ISAT reading and math assessments.  During the 2007-2008 reading scores are reported at 84.1% which is a 3% gain from 2006-2007 and math scores are 77.7% with a 4.7% gain from 2006-2007. 

 

8th Graders and The EXPLORE TEST!!!!

 

 Canter 8th grade students will take the EXPLORE test on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.  EXPLORE helps 8th and 9th graders build high school course plans that will prepare them for college and work and introduces them to career options that are relevant to them. It shows your son or daughter:

·         Area where they need extra help or additional courses

·         Suggestions for improving their skills

·         Career that match their interest

 

The EXPLORE assessment will be taking place during 1st period on both days.  Please make sure that your child is well rested and at school on time.

Pottery and Photography

The Hyde Park Arts Center will be offering after school courses in pottery and photography to students at Canter Middle School.  These classes will take place on Wednesdays beginning October 1, 2008.  The sessions will run from 2:30 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.  All classes will meet at the Hyde Park Arts Center.  There are limited spaces available and students will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.  All participants must commit to the entire 8 week program. Information will be included in the after school program packet
